How It Works

Viewport vs Physical Resolution

Modern devices use a device pixel ratio (DPR) to map CSS pixels to physical pixels. A phone with a 1170 x 2532 physical resolution and a DPR of 3 reports a viewport of 390 x 844 CSS pixels. Web developers use the viewport size for responsive design, while the physical resolution determines image sharpness.

Pixel Density (PPI)

PPI (pixels per inch) measures how densely packed pixels are on a screen. Higher PPI means sharper text and images. Phones typically have 300-500+ PPI, while desktop monitors range from 90-220 PPI. Apple's "Retina" branding generally means PPI is high enough that individual pixels aren't visible at normal viewing distance.

Common Breakpoints

Medium768 - 991pxTablets (portrait)

Aspect Ratios

Common aspect ratios include 16:9 (standard widescreen), 4:3 (classic), 19.5:9 (modern phones), and 3:2 (some laptops and tablets). The aspect ratio affects how content appears and is important for media queries and responsive layout decisions.
